New EU battering recycling regulations came into force on 26th September. These regulations aim to recycle 25% of portable batteries by 2012 and 45% all all waste batteries by 2016.

In order to achieve this target, WEEE Ireland, will distribute 50,000 waste battery drop-off boxes. 10,000 retail outlets including convenience stores, supermarkets, jewellers, hardware stores and garages will participate in the scheme. The scheme is expected to include schools, hospitals and offices over the coming months. For more information about this you can contact WEEE Ireland on 01- 2999320 or info@weeeireland.ie
Batteries which fall under the scheme include:
- Portable batteries (AA, AAA, C,D button etc)
- Mobile phone and laptop batteries
- Batteries embedded in cordless electronic devices
- Car batteries
The good news for consumers is that there is no charge or obligation to purchase new batteries at participating outlets. The service is absolutely FREE!
After getting sorted in Ireland, waste batteries collected will be transported to Europe where they will undergo final treatment and safe recycling at dedicated battery recycling plants. Much of the metal components in batteries can be reused in the manufacturing of new batteries.
By recycling and preventing batteries from going to landfill, you will help protect the environment and human health from potential hazardous chemicals.
So get rummaging in those drawers for your old batteries and give them a new home!
